Hey guys.

I'm thinking the next equipment purchase I need is a chronograph. I don't like showing up at games and discovering problems with my marker that I have a hard time fixing in the field. I'd rather sort this stuff out in my garage prior to game day.

Thing is, unless I can find one for around $30.00 or less, I'm probably out of luck here. I just can't afford anything higher and still pay for paint this season. On eBay the price usually seems to go up around $50 to $70 for that cheap yellow one. There's another white/beige one that tends to sell even higher.

Any ideas?

I am in the same boat, I've been keeping an eye out for bargains, but the prices are staying high probably because everyone needs one.

I have toyed with the idea of using my laptop's microphone to measure the time between the shot and a strike on something solid, over a pre-determined distance, as this guy is suggesting in this spud gun forum: http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/homemade-chronograph-t12521.html

Not sure if the microphone would be sensitive enough to hear a paintball strike as opposed to a potato, and I would want to write a program that would dynamically look for the peaks and do the calculation for you, but I've put it off because it seems too much like work. Even if it worked it would not be too accurate as compared to a radar chrono, but good enough to tinker and get the approximate FPS, to be fine tuned when a real chrono is available.

Hmmmm an iPhone or Droid (Motorola, not MacDev) could do all that, maybe I will learn to program those and sell the app to paintballers. Then they can pay $200 for an iPhone instead of $50 for a chrono :)

The lowest price for a chrono I've seen, is $40 for a radarchron (the yellow one) on Ebay.

Cheapest on the bay right now is $59.99 with zero bids for the beige one.
And $68 for a new yellow one.

They are surely worth their weight when it comes to fiddling with your markers at home.

Thank you for your consideration.

I was able to score one virtually for free with an automag package. Sold off a bunch of the stuff and came out ahead.
