Swissmist

Swissmist is about 20 minutes away from downtown Boulder.

Swissmist is on Sugarloaf Mountain

GPS Coordinates

  • Latitude: N/A
  • Longitude: N/A

UPDATED 10/1/2004 - The last game we had at Swissmist a ranger showed up because of homeowner complaints in the area. Essentially the ranger requested that we play further west instead of against the border. The maps below have been updated with a blue arrow indicating the direction of the preferred play area. Keep in mind that Switzerland trail is rough terrain and you may not be able to drive all the way to the preferred play area. In this situation, park on public property indicated by the yellow arrows (be sure that you park on public land).

Swissmist is off of Switzerland trail, which is actually a county road. Although Switzerland trail is a treacherous road to drive on, the field is easily accessible to all cars since it's at the start of the trail. Many parts of this field area seem to be secluded and is frequented mostly by off-roaders. The field consists of brush, pines and aspen which varies in thickness throughout. At the top of the peak of the field lies a 200 foot square fenced area which seems to be some sort of abandoned monitoring station (remember the 150 yard rule).

Maps available
Blue arrow denotes preferred field area (the further west the better to prevent homeowner complaints)
Yellow
arrows denotes Swissmist parking on the maps below.
Red arrow denotes the field's peak and direction from the parking area.
NOTE: Light green shading is national forest. Private land is dark green shading.

From Boulder

  1. From Boulder take Canyon Blvd west into the Rockies.
  2. About 1 mile after you pass the tunnel in the canyon, there will be a 'Sugarloaf' sign indicating a right turn (this sign is about 1/4 mile after the Magnolia Rd turnoff). This road is county road 122.
  3. Travel up county road 122 to the top of Sugarloaf and watch out for the Sugarload Peak which is the tallest peak in the area just to the right... Just as this peak is adjacent to your right look for a small brown sign that says 'Switzerland Trail 1 Mile >'. This road (called county rd 93 on map) also has a street name of "Sugarloaf Mnt Rd". Said road looks more like a dirt driveway as it is narrow. Travel 1 mile up this road to the end (watch the bunnies on the road :).
  4. At the end of this road, is sort of a 'loop of dirt' that looks more like a parking lot but the loop is actually the Switserland Trail loop which is pretty hard to distinguish. You can park at this loop or you can take the trail to the left and park where all the sticks of wood lie on the ground (pretty odd...all the trails in this vicinity have tons of sticks on them which i presume is to keep dirtbikers off)

Alternate directions by Vince (Added 11/27/2006)

  1. From Boulder take Canyon Blvd west into the Rockies.
  2. About 1 mile after you go thru the tunnel in the canyon, there will be a green 'Sugarloaf' sign indicating a right turn (this sign is about 1/4 mile after the Magnolia Rd turnoff). This road is county road 122.
  3. Travel up county road 122 to the Top of the mountain 4.8 miles and turn Right at Sugarloaf Mnt Rd. There is a small brown sign that says "Switzerland Trail 1 Mile >". The road looks more like a dirt driveway as it is narrow. Travel .8 miles up this road to the loop at the end.
  4. At the end of this road, is a loop in the road that looks more like a parking lot but the loop is actually the Switzerland Trail loop.
  5. JUST BEFORE you enter the loop turn LEFT down a small dirt road and go .4 miles and take a Left down another dirt road (no sign at turn) follow it a short distance until you see a brown vertical sign saying "237 DEAD END", turn Left on into that road, the parking is 500ft up from the sign.
