Moonrock
Moonrock is about 20 minutes away from downtown Boulder.
Moonrock is 2 miles south of Nederland
GPS Coordinates
- Latitude: N/A
- Longitude: N/A
Moonrock is part of a very large and easily accessible piece
of national forest just south of Nederland (Moonrock is 1/2
mile before Bushwhacker). Within this piece of land there
is the already established field Bushwhacker and at least
one other field yet to be named but already marked on the
map in blue. Half mile before the end of county road 132W
lies Moonrock on the right. It has some patches of heavily
wooded areas on the west side (maybe good for sniper/close
enounter type games?) and some very large and somewhat open
area mostly made up of baby pines and aspens in the center.
On the east side of this field there are more hills and escalating
rocks (in fact it can get pretty steep as it seems to go uphill
to an antenna at the top which wasn't actually located but
is marked on the map). The occasional 3 foot deep crater (maybe
an old tree that fell over and was uprooted?). It is downhill
to the north with a nice view of the Nederland area.

Moonrock on the maps below.
NOTE: The property lines are actually thin black lines on the maps. Light green shading is national forest. Private land is dark green shading. White areas are tree-less areas and can be private or public land depending on which side of the property lines they are.
Links to this area
From Boulder
- From Boulder take Canyon Blvd west into the Rockies to
Nederland (about 20 mins).
- From Nederland take 119 South approximatelly 2 mi to
county road 132W as marked on the maps (note: 132W is just
after mile marker 24 on the right and before marker 23 heading
south on 119). 132W is a dirt road 2 miles long. Also, there
should be a sign at the entrance 'camping' related. (Tip:
Entrance is several hundred feet just south of Sundance
Lodge)
- Travel approximatelly 1 mile on 132W and look for an entrance
to a large dirt parking lot on the left (this parking lot
seems to be where the map says 'University of Colorado Observatory').
Travel 300 feet further and to the right there should be
a small area that you can pull of to or even drive into
and around the loop. If you miss this area, turn back and
locate the dirt parking lot and try again. If you can't
locate the dirt parking lot, then find the end of 132W and
travel back 1/2 mile (look to the left)... there isn't necessarily
a whole lot of landmarks to find this area other than the
dirt parking lot which should be fairly easy to find (gate
to dirt parking lot may be closed).
